READINGS:

Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, with their specific prayers and customs, are a journey into your soul – a journey toward finding hope, love, fulfillment, and the realization of your deepest aspirations and dreams—a journey to discover your calling and to make your peace with G-d.

The High Holiday season is compared to the “source drawing near to the spark.” All year round the Divine “source” is spiritually “distant,” i.e. concealed, from the “spark” of your soul. There are times when the “source” is at its “farthest” (most concealed) point; so far away that the spark can hardly sense its connection to the mother flame. But then the “source” begins to draw nearer, become more revealed. On each progressive day leading to Rosh Hashana the “source” draws closer and closer to the “spark.” The closest point is on Yom Kippur, specifically during Neilah (“Locking of the Gates”), the final prayer at sundown. Thus, these days represent a type of “coming home” experience.

When the source gets closer to the spark, the spark begins to feel the warmth and it is drawn toward the larger, mother flame. It’s like when you put your hand closer to a flame, you start feeling the warmth. This is the reason that in these Ten Days of Teshuvah there is more consciousness of G-d among Jews, even those that are not familiar with the meaning of the High Holidays. Ask yourself: Are you feeling the warmth of the mother flame—the warmth of G-d—as the time draws closer to Yom Kippur. If not, why not?

The holiday season is really the story of each one of our lives, covering the entire spectrum of human experience and empowers us to achieve reconciliation and renewal, sanctity and joy – in one dance of personal and cosmic transformation.

60 Days: A Spiritual Guide to the High Holidays, by Rabbi Simon Jacobson

The High Holidays are really the story of each one of our lives, as expressed in perhaps the biggest question of all: Is there hope after loss, can we rebuild after destruction? It’s one thing to find happiness and life affirmation when we escape to a mountain; it’s quite another to be able to experience it when we are immersed in a cruel, material life. Can we really find truth in a corrupt world? Can we reach the highest places from our limited splace? Can we taste eternity as mortal creatures? Can we touch heaven even as we stand on earth? Can we, as people and as nations, ever discover true peace?

The awesome High Holidays resolutely answer these questions with a resounding and unequivocal “Yes.” Yes, there is hope. Yes, we can rebuild. Indeed, we can find an even greater love than the original one. Yes, we can marry heaven and earth. And yes, our entire world can unite in one magnificent symphony, each of us contributing our particular melody.

The holiday season covers the entire spectrum of human experience and empowers us to achieve reconciliation and renewal, sanctity and joy – in one dance of personal and cosmic transformation.
